We were hit for six here at Hackwriters with a nasty bug brought over on the Eurostar by my sister. So two weeks + still trying to recover. Not quite on the scale of MERS - the new killer virus in Saudi Arabia that's slowly spreading around, but nasty enough. Having three people in one house all choking, coughing and groaning is no fun. Trying to cheer ourselves up by listening to Scarlett O'Connor with her Black Roses and other songs. (That's Clare Bowen whose voice electrifies Nashville on TV). Funny what happens to you when you're ill, what music helps or what you want to read. I read the side effects on the pills the Doctor gave my sister and I am pretty sure that I am experiencing all of them. Crazy what they put down. 'In extreme cases may cause loss of motor control and respiratory failure' being my favourite right now. This coincides with a WHO report that antibiotics are going to stop working entirely pretty soon for everyone and we shall all have to get by on placebos. So let's hear it for the power of mind control, four pillows and Vicks. I seriously doubt I will survive the next virus I get. 'Bring out your dead' came the cry from the streets. The only consolation being that if you can hear them - you aren't dead - yet.
*May 12th: Now recovered but bones ache. Need a vacation.

Elections in South Africa. One would love people there to have voted for the DA rather than give support to President Zuma - who has done so much to entrench corruption everywhere in SA. But this is the Year of the Horse and it seems only bad things get done or are rewarded. Rural voters fall for ANC bribes sadly and some fall for the EFF extremism. ANC won big- so little will change, except now they have the running sore of 25 EFF MPS. We wish them luck.

Meanwhile I note James Skinner has won a silver medal for his book The Goa File and Michael Daniels has published a collection of his short stories this month plus Abigail George is getting recognition all over for her fiction. Good to know Hackwriter regulars are building a following.
